Green Tara
Green Tara is a beloved figure in Tibetan Buddhism,
known for her compassion, swift action, and protective nature. She is one of
the 21 Taras, each representing different attributes and virtues. Among these,
Green Tara is particularly revered as the embodiment of enlightened activity
and compassion, often invoked for protection and swift assistance.
The story of Green Tara begins with the Bodhisattva
Avalokiteshvara, who vowed to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of all
beings. It is said that Avalokiteshvara, seeing the overwhelming suffering in
the world, shed tears of compassion. From one of these tears emerged a lotus,
which bloomed to reveal Green Tara.
This miraculous birth signifies her role as a savior
and protector, embodying the compassionate action necessary to help those in
distress. Green Tara, therefore, is often depicted as a young and vibrant
woman, ready to spring into action to help those in need.
Green Tara is usually depicted seated in a relaxed
posture, with her right leg extended, ready to rise and take action. Her right
hand is held in the gesture of generosity, while her left hand holds a blue
lotus flower, symbolizing purity and power. Her color, green, represents the
energy of the active Enlightenment, and her youthful appearance emphasizes her
dynamic nature.
In Tibetan Buddhism, Green Tara is invoked through
prayers and mantras to overcome obstacles, fears, and mental disturbances. The
most common mantra associated with her is:
“Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha”
This mantra is believed to bring protection and swift
aid, helping practitioners cultivate compassion and eliminate fear.
Today, Green Tara continues to be a source of
inspiration for many. Her story and teachings encourage individuals to act with
compassion and courage in the face of challenges. In a world where suffering
and uncertainty are prevalent, Green Tara’s swift and compassionate action
serves as a guiding light for those seeking solace and strength.
The story of Green Tara is a beautiful testament to the power of compassion and the potential for enlightened action. By embodying these qualities, she inspires practitioners to embrace their own capacity for kindness and courage, helping to create a world filled with more understanding and empathy.
