The Entity:- Angel

The tantalizing aroma of freshly brewed coffee pervaded the air, and it was both inviting and invigorating. I took a seat after placing my order at the counter, and paying the bill, and I waited patiently for the cup of freshly brewed coffee, and the slice of cheesecake that I had ordered to arrive. I sat close to a large window that overlooked a street in one of Bangkok’s more popular suburbs, and watched the cars roll down the street, and the people that were walking on the sidewalk pass by, dressed in their trendy, gaily colored clothes, the Thonburi riverside district attracted more than its fair share of tourists. I caught a glimpse of someone dressed in white, walk by and my thoughts instantly turned to the angel that had appeared out of nowhere slightly over a year ago. I tried to recollect her features, she was slim, tall for a woman and fair. She had shoulder length hair that was neatly tied behind her back. While I had some difficulty recollecting her features, I remember her eyes, they were prominent, and they were a hazel brown, the locals normally referred to them as cat’s eyes, and it was not all that common in the part of the world that I was in. There is a strange tale that is attached to those with cat’s eyes and according to the tale they could see the dead. It was no doubt a fishwives’ tale that had caught on and had become ingrained in local folklore, a myth that I had no way of corroborating. She was dressed in a long flowing, silky white robe, and I remember having the strongest inclination to reach out and touch her.

I was snapped out of my thoughts by the waiter who brought my order, and I turned my attentions to the cup of freshly brewed coffee and the slice of cheesecake that was on the table in front of me. I lifted the spoon, and scooped up a tiny bit of the cake, lifted it to my mouth and tasted it. It was absolutely delicious, sweet and succulent, it almost melted in my mouth and before long, I’d finished the cake, and had gone through half the cup.

I sat back and my thoughts once again turned to the angel. I sometimes tended to think of the past, especially on days that were quiet, and I was out on my own. I’d reminisce about things that had happened in my life, particularly things that I could not find an explanation for. I wondered if she really had appeared or if it was a trick of the mind, a hallucination perhaps, driven by an innate desire to be reacquainted with someone who I dearly missed. I lamented the fact that things had turned out the way that they did, and if there was something that I could have done to prevent the rather unfortunate accident. There were even times when I would blame myself, maybe if I had insisted on going with her, I might have been able to prevent the fatal accident but it was too late for that now, and she was no longer with me.

It briefly occurred to me that she might have been the angel that had made herself visible to me on that eventful night but I dismissed the thought a minute or so later. If it was her, I would have recognized her instantly, I could never forget her. I finished my coffee and cheesecake, and once I had done so, I stepped out of the cafĂ© and walked on to the adjoining pavement, preoccupied by my thoughts. It was a warm sunny day, and despite the fact that the hour was still early, it was just half past nine, it was hot. I had walked no more than a few paces when beads of sweat started forming on my forehead. I ignored them briefly and continued walking and as I did so, tiny streams of sweat started to run down the sides of my face, and I reached down into my trouser pocket and fished out a handkerchief and just as I was about to wipe the sweat off my forehead, I turned and stepped onto a pedestrian crossing. I could have sworn that the light was green. I took two paces down the crossing when I spotted a car coming at me, and I instantly froze. My legs suddenly stopped moving, and all I could do was to turn and stare at the car, unable to move a single muscle, when out of nowhere a bright white light, flashed past me, and I heard the sound of a woman scream somewhere. A hand grabbed me and pulled me out of harm’s way, I was certain that the car was about to hit me, when by some strange stroke of luck, maybe that’s what they call divine intervention, I was saved, pulled out of harm’s way by a divine angelic hand. I guess angels do exist after all.
