The Entity: - The Exorcism

“Is it possible to see an angel?”, I asked and the man that sat in front of me replied with an affirmative nod of the head. “However,” he said, “they are only seen by those who are extremely pious, it is common especially among those who have devoted their lives to their faith”, he hesitated briefly before he continued “and those who are about to meet their demise”. “If it is any consolation, it normally means that you will die a good death, I know if you’ve seen one it’s not because of your piety”, he added with a smile. The man who is known only as Martin was a priest and he was well versed in matters with regards to paranormal activity. He belonged to a religious order that was particularly secretive especially because it was one of the few orders that when the situation required it, conducted exorcisms.

We parted company soon after that and approximately half-a-year later, I received a phone call from Martin. “I think I’ve stumbled across an actual case of possession”, he said, “do you want to attend the exorcism?”. I had to hand it to the man, only he could make an exorcism sound like a wedding. “Sure”, I agreed, I didn’t see any reason why I shouldn’t get some firsthand exposure, and we made arrangements to meet in Bangkok. I had to admit that at that stage I was skeptical, I wasn’t entirely certain that the phenomenon that is commonly known as diabolical possession was not merely a disease of the mind, but I knew that before an exorcism is attempted all medical and scientific reasons must be ruled out. The first course of action was to resort to doctors and others trained in the profession of curing a disease of the mind, it was a rule that was enforced strictly by all the orders, and in the absence of a rational or a logical explanation, an exorcism is sanctioned.

I took a flight to Bangkok where I met my friend and from there, we journeyed to a remote village in Sakon Nakhon. The area is known for its rice fields, and at one stage of the journey we could see rice paddies in every direction that we looked. While we were in the car, Martin managed to relate part of the story to me. “The victim was a 14-year-old boy, who was fine up until about six or so months ago, when he suddenly and unexpectedly started to succumb to bouts of hysteria”. “From what I was told, he was walking home after a football game, the hour was just past sunset, when he saw something by a tree and instantly took fright”. “It was soon after that that the bouts of hysteria started”. One of Martin’s colleagues who ran a charity in the area, it was a somewhat impoverished part of the country, came to know of the boy’s plight, and once he’d made himself known to the family proceeded to help as best as he could, and some six months later, after all medical avenues had been exhausted, an exorcism was sanctioned.

We reached the house, after a long but somewhat colorful journey, I enjoyed my trips to Thailand, it was actually where I’d first bumped into Martin, like me he was a paranormal researcher, and once we realized that we shared a similar interest, we exchanged notes and became friends. We stepped out of the car just as the sun was setting over the horizon, and I managed to catch a glimpse of the crimson sky prior to stepping into the house with Martin leading the way, and as soon as we walked in I realized that it was cool, despite it being warm outside, and I started to get a tingly feeling at the base of my spine. We were greeted by the boy’s parents who ushered us into a little room at the back of the house, and we saw the boy seated at his desk. He stood up as soon as we entered, and Martin quickly made the introductions before he pulled out a small transparent canister from his pocket filled with a red powder, while the rest of us, including the boy’s aunty, who’d joined us by then, looked on.

He unscrewed the lid of the canister, and as soon as he lifted the lid, I caught a whiff of what was in it, and I instantly knew that it was chili powder. “The acid test”, he murmured under his breath and walked over to the boy before he got down on one knee, took out a pinch of the red powder, and pressed it on the boy’s toenail, and the boy instantly cried out in pain. As soon as he did so, an eerie mist filled the room, and there was a chill in the air.

The chili powder would not have had any effect on a normal person, but it did have an effect on the entity that had temporarily entered the boy’s body, and that is in fact what had made the boy cry out.

Martin then asked the others to leave the room, and as soon as they did so he fished out a small bible from his pocket, and a string of rosary beads with a cross attached to it, and a bottle of holy water which he handed to me. “Sprinkle some water on the boy whenever I give you the signal”, he said, and I nodded my head. He then opened the bible, and started reading from it while he held on to the string of rosary beads with his right hand and every now and again, he would gesture with his left hand, and I would sprinkle some holy water on the boy.

A couple of minutes after he’d started, the boy’s complexion began to change, and he started speaking in a soft feminine voice at first, somewhat demure, and flirtatious initially, and when that didn’t stop Martin, the voice got harsher, and the boy started swearing profanely, before he started pleading but Martin was not moved and finally the entity exited the body while the boy staggered and fell to the ground.

The exorcism lasted for no more than a couple of hours, and towards the end, just before the entity vacated the boy’s body, a split second before the boy sagged to the ground, I could have sworn that I heard a giggle, and the mist in the room cleared, and the voice of the angel that had blessed me with her presence, slightly over a year ago echoed in my head. “Beware of the entity”, she said.
