St. Lucia


St. Lucia is an island in the Caribbean Sea located north of Trinidad and Tobago with a total population of approximately 166,487 inhabitants.

The island covers an area of approximately 616 sq. km, of which 606 sq. km or 98.38% is land and 10 sq. km or 1.62% is water. Of the total land available 4.9% or 30.18 sq. km is arable. Almost 77% of the total land available or 474.32 sq. km is covered with forests.

The island’s total GDP is valued at 1.686 billion. The services sector is the island’s largest GDP contributor accounting for 82.8% of total GDP or 1.4 billion. The services sector is followed by industry which accounts for 14.2% or 0.24 billion of total GDP and agriculture which accounts for 2.9% or 0.05 billion of total GDP.

The island’s total labor force is estimated at 79,700 or 47.87% of the total population. Of the total labor force available 53.6% or 42,719 are employed in the services sector, 24.7% or 19,686 are employed in the industrial sector and 21.7% or 17,295 are employed in the agricultural sector. 

The island’s main industries include tourism; clothing, assembly of electronic components, beverages, corrugated cardboard boxes, lime processing, and coconut processing. 

The island’s main agricultural produce include bananas, coconuts, vegetables, citrus, root crops, and cocoa. 

The island’s primary exports are bananas, clothing, cocoa, avocados, mangoes, and coconut oil.

St. Lucia’s biggest trading partner is the United States and it accounts for 67.6% of all exports and 53.3% of all imports. The island shares very good ties with the United States.

Other export partners include the United Kingdom 5.9% and Trinidad and Tobago 5.5%. Other major import partners include Trinidad and Tobago 10.8%.
