Montserrat


Montserrat is an island in the Caribbean Sea located southeast of Puerto Rico with a total population of approximately 5,373 inhabitants.

The island covers an area of approximately 102 sq. km, almost all of which is land. Of the total land available 20% or 20.4 sq. km is arable. Almost 25% of the total land available or 25.5 sq. km is covered with forests.

The island’s total GDP is valued at 167.4 million. The services sector is the island’s largest GDP contributor accounting for 90.3% of total GDP or 151.16 million. The services sector is followed by industry which accounts for 7.8% or 13.06 million of total GDP and agriculture which accounts for 1.9% or 3.18 million of total GDP.

The island’s total labor force is estimated at 4,521 or 84.14% of the total population. Of the total labor force available 85.9% or 3,884 are employed in the services sector, 12.7% or 574 are employed in the industrial sector and 1.4% or 63 are employed in the agricultural sector. 

The island’s main industries include tourism; rum, textiles, and the manufacturing of electronic appliances.

The island’s main agricultural produce include cabbages, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, peppers and livestock related products. 

The island’s primary exports are electronic components, plastic bags, apparel; hot peppers, limes, life plants and cattle.

Montserrat’s biggest trade partner is the United States and it accounts for 29% of all exports and 72.8% of all imports. The island shares very good ties with the United States.

Other export partners include France 23% and Saint Kitts and Nevis 22.2%. Other major import partners include Trinidad and Tobago 6%, and the United Kingdom 4.1%.
