Varanasi is the oldest city in India and one of the oldest cities in the world. It is from all accounts the religious capital of India. Also known as Vanares or Banares it is located in the southeastern part of the state of Uttar Pradesh.
There are approximately 23,000 temples scattered all over the city. While all the cities that are located along the river Ganges are of religious significance, three cities feature more prominently than the others – Varanasi, Haridwar and Allahabad, the third is also the birth place of one of India’s former Prime Ministers, Indira Gandhi.
When Mark Twain visited the city in 1897, he had this to say about Varanasi – “....older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together”
